A small-town hero, Mark Antaeus gained limited superhuman abilities as the result of genetic experiments performed by his father. Grief stricken after he failed to save people from a tenement fire because he was not powerful enough Mark disappeared for several years.
Returning with extensive cybernetic alterations and more powerful than before, Antaeus soon came to the attention of the Justice League. Offering the hero a trial membership he excelled under the League's tutelage, but he desired to make an even bigger difference.
Liberating a third world nation from its dictatorship, Antaeus' actions accidentally cause more deaths when the nation was plunged into chaos. In the end Antaeus' misery and feelings of failure cause him to take his own life.
