As a graduate student in physics, Ray Palmer developed a ray beam to reduce matter by focusing ultra-violet rays through a lens fashioned from the fragment of a white-dwarf star, but the process was unstable and caused the mass to explode.

Palmer became trapped in a cavern with a group of young explorers. Risking death to save the youths, he used his reducing lens to escape the cavern, and to his surprise survived the process.

Palmer fashioned a hand-controlled device allowing him alter his size at will and a costume from a portion of the white-dwarf mass that appeared when he reduced his normal size, becoming the tiny titan known as the Atom.
