Decades ago, an aging Bruce Wayne was forced to retire asBatman when his heart began to fail during a hostage rescue mission. Wayne Enterprises was taken over by the criminal Derek Powers and Wayne now lives alone in his mansion as an elderly recluse.
Enter Terry McGinnis, a high-school juvenile delinquent who discovers Wayne's secret. After McGinnis' father was murdered to keep Power's crimes secret, McGinnis turns to Wayne for help. When Wayne refused McGinnis "borrows" an experimental cybernetic uniform to gain revenge.
Although reluctant to take on a new protégé, Wayne eventually agrees to train McGinnis in the art of crime fighting as the Batman of the Future.
