In the years after World War I, Europeans began to question the values they once held as sacred. Paris was the hub of radical thought about politics, theology, philosophy, literature and art.
Twin sisters, Madeline and Judith Benoir, were members of the artist community and both responded in different ways to the death of their parents in a bombed church during the war. Madeline is a quiet, reserved and religiously devout writer. Judith is a radical, hedonistic and atheistic artist.
After Judith's rape and murder by a wealthy and politically connected member of the Arbogast family, her sister resolves to seek revenge. Disguised as colorful and grotesque phantom, Madeline strikes at the Arbogasts and the privileged society that turns a blind eye from the problems of Paris, chanting the mantra, Beware the Creeper.
