Guilt-ridden because one of his fellow bank clerks was gunned down during a robbery as a result of his inaction, Lazarus Lane attempted to redeem himself during a second encounter with those selfsame bank robbers. Beaten and thrown into a shallow stream by the bandits, the soaking wet Lane was suddenly struck by a random bolt of lightning, leaving him in a deep coma.
Lane was carried back to his home by a trusted friend, the elderly Apache shaman known as Wise Owl. For two nights Wise Owl administered herbal medicines and chanted mystical prayers. On the third night Lane awoke. Though not dead, Lane was not truly alive, for the lighting that should have killed him had instead split his soul. He was now two men, the husk that was Lazarus Lane who would only sleep, and a dark avenger who sought only to dispense justice as the frontier phantom known as El Diablo.
