A brilliant child, Ralph Dibny was obsessed with two things; criminal detective work and the art of contortion. After interviewing several contortionist, Dibny discovered they all consumed a soda called Gingold. After learning chemistry, Dibny developed a highly-concentrated Gingold extract which gave him extreme elasticity. Assuming a public superhero identity, Dibny became the flexible detective known as the Elongated Man.
