Orphaned at a young age Mary Batson was separated from her brother Billy (Captain Marvel), and adopted by a family that lived in a suburb outside of Fawcett City.
The two would be reunited by a twist of fate. Mary unknowingly met her brother who was hosting a quiz show, which Mary was a contestant. Information was shared with Billy that Mary may be his sister, which he could verify from half a locket which he owned.
Billy and his partner Freddy Freeman transformed to Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr., then followed Mary back to her home after the contest.
When Mary was held hostage the Marvel duo rescued her. Transforming back to their normal selves the truth was revealed about Mary and Billy's relationship. In their vulnerable forms, the boys were overtaken and gagged by the revived criminals. Unable to speak their magic word, Mary exclaimed, "Billy can't say Shazam!" Magical lightening struck down and transformed her into Earth's mightiest girl, Mary Marvel.
