To end the centuries-long war between New Genesis and Apokolips, Darkseid and High Father agreed to exchange their sons as part of a pact, thus he became the foster son of the ruler of Apokolips. Darkseid left him in the custody of Granny Goodness, who named the child Scott Free and raised him in her "orphanage" to be trained as a aero-trooper.
As an adult Scott Free was assisted by the rebellious Metron and Himon, who gave him and his love, Big Barda, the means to escape to Earth.
On Earth Scott befriended the retired escape artist Thaddeus Brown who had gone by the stage name of Mister Miracle. When Brown was murdered by the gangster Steel Hand, Free assumed his friend's stage identity to bring Steel Hand to justice.
Using the advanced science of the New Gods, Scott Free began a career as the worlds greatest escape artist, Mister Miracle.
