A black-and-white Astro Boy animated series was produced by the Mushi Productions which aired in Japan beginning in 1963. The character would also appear in an animated feature film in 1964.
Astro Boy was the first commercial animated television program in Japan and credited with starting the genre of Anime.
Dr. Tenma built a remarkable robot. Made in the likeness of the professor's dead son, he appeared so convincingly human that some believed he had a soul. Throughout the world he is known as the hero, Astro Boy.
