Former astronaut Steve Austin is almost fatally injured when the experimental aircraft he is piloting crashes on the runway. Under the direction of the Office of Scientific Intelligence (O.S.I.), Austin's battered body is repaired with experimental bionic components. Equipped with new legs, an arm and a left eye, Austin is forced to serve as a government operative in exchange for his cybernetic enhancements. At first Austin is resentful and suicidal as the result of being rebuilt as a cyborg, but in time he grows to appreciate his new better, stronger, faster abilities; and embraces his role as the cybernetic espionage agent known as the Six Million Dollar Man.
