Regularly Appearing
Masters of the Universe Vol. 1, 2 & 3
First Appearance

DC Comics Presents Vol. 1 #47 (July, 1982)

Note: Initially a line of action-figures produced by Mattel, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was spun-off into print and television media as a means of advertising.

Before the DC Comics Presents appearance of He-Man, the character first appeared in a series of illustrated storybook mini-comics that were included with the initial 1982 release of the toys. The first mini-comic titled He-Man and the Power Sword, told the story of how a nameless ax-wielding barbarian saved the Sorceress and was gifted with great powers. Because there was no existing media depicting the Masters of the Universe characters, the comic was produced as a means of marketing the toys to compete with other toy lines that were derived from movies or television.

In a meeting with Toys R Us, Mattel's largest buyer, it was pointed out that the target audience for the toy line was too young to read; essentially negating the comic as a marketing tool. A member of the Mattel team bluffed Toys R Us into believing that a pair of one-hour television specials were in the works. When the animation company Filmation was approached with the project, Mattel was informed that they could produce an entire season for the same financial investment of two one-hour episodes. Mattel ordered a first season of 65 episodes, which aired in the United States starting in Sept. 1983. The cartoon would air 103 original episodes until 1985, and spin-off into two new future He-Man cartoons, and She-Ra: Princess of Power, a show more targeted towards girls.

He-Man was introduced in comics through a team up with Superman in DC Comics Presents, and a three issue limited-series was produced by DC in 1982. Marvel Comics produced a twelve issue run under its Star line of comics, targeted at younger readers in 1986. Image Comics began publishing a new line of Masters of the Universe comics in 2003.
