Note: Shōnen Book "Boy's Book" was a manga magazine published from March, 1958 until April, 1969. The magazine is the predecessor to the currently published Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Mach GoGoGo was a feature published in Shōnen Book from June 1966 until May 1968. The manga series was adapted into a 52-episode anime which aired on Fuji TV from April 1967 to March 1968. The anime series was translated into English renamed Speed Racer and syndicated by Trans-Lux for broadcast in the United States for the 1967 television season, where it continued in syndication by another company for many decades in after-school programming primarily on independent broadcast stations.
The son of Daisuke "Pops Racer" Mifune, a well-known and innovative racecar designer and engineer, it could be said that racing ran in Gō Mifune's blood.
After quiting his job for a major car manufacturer Pops started his own company and racing team, with his older son Fukumen as its rising star on the racing circuit. The over-protective Pops warned Fukumen that he was not prepared to compete professionally, and the eldest son's hubris cost him a major race when he wrecked the car in the final lap. Pop's temper got the better of him, and after a verbal altercation with Fukumen, the eldest son left home swearing to become the world's greatest race car driver. Fukumen would return years later as the guardian angel of his younger brother in the guise of the mysterious masked racer known as Racer X.
When Gō turned 18 years old, he became his father's newest star racer. Fearing that his temper would cost him yet another son, Pops vowed to support his son's ambitions by creating the ultimate racecar; the Mach 5. Armed with a unique array of offensive and defensive features, Gō Mifune races the Mach 5 around the world in the most exotic and unusual races as the demon on wheels called Speed Racer.
