Other than Thor, Balder is regarded as Asgard's noblest god and greatest warrior.
Prophecies tell that Ragnarok (twilight of the gods) would be triggered by the death of the noble Balder. To prevent this occurring Odin, the lord and father of the Norse gods, commanded his wife Frigga to make Balder immune from physical attack while in the realm of Asgard. Legends tell that the mother of the gods solicited promises from the elements and animals of the realm to never harm Balder, with the exception of mistletoe.
Because of Balder's invulnerability to physical attack the Norse gods took sport in what would have otherwise been deadly assaults. Learning of Balder's vulnerability, and wishing to bring about Ragnarok, Loki the god of mischief deceived and guided the hand of the blind god Hoder into hurling an dart of mistletoe at Balder.
Seriously wounded and near death, Balder was cast into suspended animation by Odin. Although Balder still lived his spirit journey to Hel where he endured many terrors which tested his honor.
Eventually escaping the realm of the dead, he continues his noble fight for justice and the realm of Asgard as Balder the Brave.
