Discovering she was the daughter of an infamous cat burglar, Felicia Hardy was inspired to follow in his footsteps and undertook training in physical and criminal skills.
She had a varying degree of success in her criminal career, encountering the masked vigilante Spider-Man on several occasions later joining forces with him both professionally and personally.
After her injuries at the hands of Dr. Octopus, Spider-Man refused to let her join him in his adventures for fear of her safety. Determined to continue Hardy sought a means of obtaining superhuman powers.
She was aided by the Kingpin, who had ulterior motives to cause her and Spider-Man misery. His scientist activated her latent mutant ability to change probability, causing bad luck to others, becoming a true Black Cat.
