Known Powers

Treelike alien with superhuman strength, stamina and agility capable of controlling other plant life, and regenerating itself from as little mass as a splinter.

Genius level intelligence with the entirety of knowledge inherited from his progenitors through Photonic Knowledge.

Note: Due to the species Flora Colossus tree-like physiology causing their larynxes to be stiff, the only phrase that they appear to utter is "I am Groot." Groot is best understood by his partner Rocket Raccoon, who is either able to decipher his utterances or detect plant pheromones which may be used for communication.

Tales to Astonish

First Appearance
Tales to Astonish #13 (Nov. 1960)
Creator
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
Origin

A member of the monarch class of his species, Groot was privileged to knowledge from an ennobled sap-line which gave him genius-level intelligence. Preferring the company of Planet X's maintenance mammals, Groot was exiled for killing one of his kind defending a mammal.

The first appearance on Earth of the alien from Planet X was when he apparently attempted to study humans by abducting them, but he met his apparent end at the mandibles of termites. Apparently regrowing from the remains left by the termites, the alien was next seen as a member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Paranormal Containment Unit, then later the Guardians of the Galaxy, uttering only the words "I am Groot."
