Hallie Takahama's parents moved from California to New York City while she was a young child, and lived a peaceful and affluent life until the psionic monster Onslaught and his Sentinels's attack on the city resulted in her parents' death. In the aftermath, Takahama and several other children were abducted by the mercenary group the Rat Pack for the mad geneticist Arnim Zola, who performed experiments that unlocked an ability to harness her bio-electrical energy.
Escaping captivity, Takahama sought aid from the Fantastic Four at Four Freedom Plaza, but in the wake of Onslaught's attack the team was missing and presumed dead. Instead of the World's Greatest Superhero Team, Four Freedom Plaza was occupied by the newly formed Thunderbolts. After rescuing the other children held captive by Zola, Takahama joined the Thunderbolts as the supercharged Jolt.
