The second son of the ancient leader of Earth's Eternals, Chronos and his mate Daina, two of the first generation of an evolutionary offshoot of humanity, who had been genetically enhanced by the giant alien race of gods known as the Celestials.
A rivalry existed between Chronos and his brother Uranos, which lead to a civil war. Victorious, Chronos created a society of peace and tranquility. While searching for the secrets of cosmic regeneration, Chronos' experiment containing cosmic energy detonated, disintegrating him and affecting every person within a 3-mile radius. Although his body was destroyed, the cosmic energy enabled his astral form to exist in the physical world, the other Eternals were empowered with a near immortal life expectancy.
When A'Lars and his brother Zuras reached adulthood, there was a general assembly to determine who would succeed Chronos as leader of the Eternals. When Zuras was chosen over A'Lars, he decided to exile himself to Jupiter's moon Titan to avoid a civil war akin to the one his father and uncle had fought for leadership.
On Titan A'Lars discovered the remnants of the underground colony his uncle had established ages before. Surveying the world A'Lars discovered a sole survivor Sui-San. The two mated and repopulated the world, although neither she nor their offspring possessed A'Lars's immortality, although they possessed great powers and could measure their lives in centuries rather than years, becoming a race of Titans.
The last of the couples children were Eros and Thanos. Eros was a normal Eternal, but Thanos, was born deviant and would eventually turn against his family, causing his mother's death in an attack upon Titan.
