Death seemed to be a companion of Craig Hollis since the day he was born, in fact death was his playmate - an entity known as Deathurge. Although Deathurge took everyone Hollis ever loved he never would take him, even when he attempted to end his own life.
To his surprise, and the astonishment of the crowd which witnessed his plunge from a tenement building window, Hollis could not die - he was apparently immortal. After numerous attempts Hollis concluded that he possessed super-powers and would put them into service as Mr. Immortal.
