When World War I began in 1914 American fighter pilot Karl Kaufman joined the Entente Powers of Great Britain, France and Russia to fight against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. Fearing reprisals against his German born parents who had returned to their native country many years before, Kaufman donned a stylized aviators costume to battle in the air as the Phantom Eagle.
