High school student David Alleyne discovers that he has the mutant ability to absorb for a limited time the knowledge of any person he comes into contact with. Unfortunately an anti-mutant group known as Purity has also discovered Alleyne is a mutant.
Detected by Professor Xavier's mutant detecting device Cerebra - Danielle Moonstar (Mirage II) is dispatched to recruit this latest mutant to the Xavier School. When Purity threatens Alleyne and his family Mirage and her former New Mutants teammate Karma defeat the violent bigots.
Deciding that Xavier's institute would be a safer place - as well as a school where Alleyne can better learn to use his skills he joins the New X-Men under the codename of Prodigy.
