Virginia "Pepper" Potts became Tony Stark's personal secretary after she impressed the industrialist by noticing an accounting error that saved him a lot of money.

Stark's trust grew in her to the point that he revealed his heroic identity as Iron Man

Potts proximity to Iron Man often put her in danger, and eventually she was injured by an explosion caused by Ezekiel Stane. Suffering multiple shrapnel wounds, surgery was performed on Potts, but she could only be saved by an electromagnetic generator implanted into her chest. Pott's cybernetic enhancements enabled her to pilot an armor similar to that of Iron Man's, that had less offensive weaponry but enabled her to control magnetic fields as Rescue.
