A coal miner who fought for the rights of his fellow miners, Daniel Rose was targeted for assassination by the mine boss. In the ensuing battle between the miners and the hired thugs, the mine boss detonated an explosive charge while attempting his escape. After the explosion, both sides were killed, with Ross the only man left alive. The explosion was so massive that the town above sank into a massive hole, killing the inhabitants in including Rose's wife and child.

Exposed to a mysterious gas which gave him great strength and durability, and driven insane by grief, Rose convinced himself that he was the leader of the subterranean inhabitants of Abysmia, an underground kingdom founded by a race of once primitive humans on the North American continent who sought refuge beneath the earth during the last ice age. Beneath the earth these primitive humans built an advanced civilization and developed superhuman strength to adapt to their hostile environment. During the second world war the "leader" of Abysmia learned of plots against America and resolved to aid them against tyranny as the super-strong Rockman.
