Origin

The son of a Brazilian millionaire, Roberto da Costa lived a life of leisure and privilege.

As a teen, da Costa was playing in a championship fútbol (soccer) match for his school, when he had an altercation with another player. In defense, da Costa's mutation manifest itself turning his complexion jet-black; causing other players and spectators to panic.

Da Costa's public exposure as a mutant, brought him to the attention of Donald Pierce, the renegade White Bishop of the Hellfire Club, who was dedicated to eradicating superhuman mutants.

Pierce's plot came to the attention of Professor Xavier, who sent members of a new mutant team to Brazil to assist da Costa. Before Xavier's team could arrive, Pierce's mercenaries attempted to kidnap da Costa, failing but instead kidnapping da Costa's girlfriend Juliana. Holding the girl hostage, Pierce's mercenaries intended to draw da Costa into a trap. During the battle da Costa's powers began to fail and Juliana was fatally shot attempting to defend her boyfriend. Feeling guilt for the death of his girlfriend and desiring vengeance against Pierce, da Costa joined Xavier's New Mutants as Sunspot.
