G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983)

G.I. Joe Action Figure

The first "doll" marketed to boys, G.I. Joe made its first appearance on toy shelves as a 12 inch fully possible figure manufactured by Hasbro in 1964. The toyline was named after the 1945 World War II movie The Story of G.I. Joe which depicted the experiences of imbedded war correspondent Ernie Pyle in North Africa and Italy. Three months before the release of the movie depicting his war experiences Pyle would die on the Japanese Island of Iejima during the battle of Okinawa. Multiple gunshot wounds left his body only identifiable by his dog tags.

Note: The first historical instance of the name G.I. Joe was a United States Army messenger pigeon who delivered the news of the liberation of an Italian village by British soldiers, on the eve of its scheduled bombing - saving the lives of the villagers and the liberating soldiers. After the war G.I. Joe was awarded the Dickin Metal - a military award reserved for animals who show valor in combat.

Origin

When an average American citizen becomes disaffected by his government he seeks to overthrow the institutions he believe deny individual liberty by creating the terrorist group Cobra.

To counter the threat of Cobra and its leader Cobra Commander, the United States Government sanctions a military taskforce of the best soldiers the armed services have to offer, codenaming the group G.I. Joe.
