Note: Voltron's first comics appearance was in a three issue limited series by Modern Comics.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe! originally appeared as a syndicated cartoon imported by Toei Animation from Japan, where it was known as Hyakujuu-Ou Go-Lion, translated as "Hundred-Beast King Go Lion". Voltron originally aired in Japan from March 1981 to Feb. 1982 and came to the United States in 1984.

The cartoon had several incarnations including Voltron: The Third Dimension which follows up the original series and included computer graphics incorporated with the traditional animation, and Voltron Force which had the same basic premise of a giant robot, but instead of being comprised of giant robot lions it was comprised of land, sea and air vehicles which integrated into appendages and the torso.

Toei Animation (Japan)

In a distant time and a distant galaxy a group of scientists on the planet Arus created a mighty robot as the ultimate defense.

After countless defeats by the robot, King Zarkon instructed his witch Haggar to devise a plan to defeat the galaxy defender.

Disguised as a goddess in distress, Haggar cursed Voltron, splitting the robot into five lions, which went into hibernation.

After many ages, a band of space explorers discovered the five sleeping lions and reformed the once mighty robot to challenge the tyrannical rule of King Zarkon as Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
