Invented by Kem-L, a Kryptonian ancestor of Superman, the Eradicator was a sentient computer program designed to ensured the genetic purity of Kryptonians. Of its many powers it was able to alter the genetic makeup of Kryptonians so that they would be unable to survive anywhere besides Krypton, unfortunately this also this meant that Kryptonians could not escape the imminent doom foreseen by Jor-El.
Superman brought the Eradicator to Earth as a Kryptonian relic, but discovered that it was uncontrollable, thus he buried it in the Arctic. Within its icy grave the relic began construction upon a Kryptonian fortress that would become the Fortress of Solitude. The fortress was designed to transform Earth and force Superman to return to his Kryptonian heritage. Ultimately the plan failed and Superman cast the relic into the sun nearly destroying the Eradicator program.
The Eradicator returned once again with a humanoid form, but was defeated by Superman once again within the Fortress of Solitude. After Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday, the program reformed within the Fortress of Solitude and used mass from Superman's body to create a new Eradicator. This Eradicator returned Superman to the Fortress of Solitude to revive him within an energy matrix. Resurrected, Superman joined with the Eradicator and other heroes to battle the Cyborg Superman. The Eradicator sacrificed its energies to protect Superman from Kryptonite energy released by the Cyborg Superman.
The inert body of the Eradicator was taken to S.T.A.R. Labs where experiments by Dr. David Connor caused his mind to be transferred into the Eradicator's body. Connor's humanity would override any compunction the Eradicator program had to convert Earth into a new Krypton, converting a former menace into a hero.
