Voltron: Defender of the Universe! originally appeared as a syndicated cartoon imported from Japan by Toei Animation, where it was known as Hyakujuu-Ou Go-Lion, translated as "Hundred-Beast King Go Lion." Voltron and originally aired in Japan from March 1981 to Feb. 1982 and came to the United States in 1984.

The cartoon had several incarnations including Voltron: The Third Dimension which follows up the original series and included computer graphics incorporated with the traditional animation, and Voltron Force which had the same basic premise of a giant robot, but instead of being comprised of giant robot lions it was comprised of land, sea and air vehicles which integrated into different appendages and the torso.

The son of King Zarkon and heir to the throne of the planet Doom, Prince Lotor began his tutelage in tyranny abroad but now assist his despotic father in the quest to destroy Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
