Lord Shingen Harada dishonored his family name by turning it into a criminal empire. The father of Mariko Yashida and Keniuchio Harada (Silver Samurai), he has come into conflict with the mutant Wolverine on several occasions.
Harada forced his daughter Mariko, who had been engaged to Wolverine, to marry another criminal boss who beat her nearly to death. When Wolverine discovered this he confronted Lord Shingen.
Shingen secretly poisoned Wolverine, which although his mutant healing ability was able to save his life it temporarily weakening him allowing Shingen to beat and humiliate the superhuman mutant in a duel with wooden swords by targeting crucial nerve endings. Fearing eminent death Wolverine attempted to use his claws against Shingen appearing to have cheated in a legitimate duel. Mariko did not know that Wolverine's body had been saturated with enough poison to kill several dozen men, or that Shingen was the one who was actually cheating in the duel.
Wolverine would return and destroy the Yashida criminal empire, confronting and killing Shingen. Although her father was finally defeated and Mariko was free to marry Wolverine, Shingen's criminal ties had dishonored her and she no longer believed herself worthy of Wolverine.
