Abandoned by his parents as a baby, Mortimer Toynbee grew up in an orphanage. Other children, who regarded him as a freak, tormented the youngster continually. Desperate for affection he developed a pathetically subservient personality, and would unquestioningly obey anyone he thought sincerely cared for him.
The mutant terrorist Magneto recruited Toynbee for his Brotherhood of Mutants and in reference to his powers, appearance and personality dubbed him Toad.
